Entangling Vines is the first English translation of the Shumon Kattoshu, one of the major koan collections used in traditional Japanese Rinzai Zen training. Each of the 282 koans in the collection is presented with the original Chinese, the English translation, and footnotes.
The main text is followed by an appendix providing biographical information on every figure that appears in the book. Robert Aitken Roshi praised
Entangling Vines as a "masterpiece," and commented, "It will be our inspiration for ten
thousand years, not just [in] itself but as a model for translations of other classics." This fine clothbound volume, with 33 pages of introductory material and 237 pages of text, is available from the Institute for Zen Studies for JPN5000 For information,
